HASA Beinte Cinco

August 31, 2007
My father's birthday. . . But I won't be home for weekend.
He knows why and I know he understands.heheh

Anyways, its HASA Beinte Cinco!
It's an annual beauty (and brains) pageant at the University of the Philippines in the Visayas, as part of the Pahampang (Sportsfest), sponsored by the Validus Amicitia Brotherhood. This pageant is not your ordinary beauty pageant nor a gay contest. Men, real men, one from each academic group, are transformed into women who would compete for the crown. They join this pageant for several reasons: to show off their talent(?), for additional points in exams or maybe in their final grades, to raise the flag of their academic course, forced, maybe blackmailed?heheh Hasa is one of the major events in Pahampang that has a high impact in an Acad group's overall points. You see, Pahampang is a real big deal in the university. Its real purpose is to unite the students through sports and other activities, especially the faction between the City and Miag-ao students. But it couldn't be avoided most of the times. But its one thing that the brotherhood emphasizes during Hasa. They try to mediate between Miag-ao and City audiences when the going gets tough (. . .and the tough gets going).

The word Hasa is synonymous to enhance, sharpen and/or train. But it can also be associated to a Hiligaynon word, Haso. I don't really know how to explain the word, so don't ask me now.heheh Hasa is a showcase of talent and humor full of sense and wit. You don't just crack a joke in here, or else, you'll be humiliated, criticized, and your word would become a common expression around the university adding to the insult. With the tight competition between the City and Miag-ao students, you should really be careful. The contestant must also have his self-confidence raised to the highest level to be more wacky. To help, they are first given a beer, or some drinks to boost their confidence.

As a Magnate, I'm proud of their contestant this year, Ralph (I don't know his full name). But I remembered him well when I was in my fourth year and he was a freshman then who was an athlete already. He brought Magnates to 2nd place in Hasa this year. With this year's concept, Controversial Celebrities, he impersonated Paris Hilton. Take a look at his interview portion which I really think he did well:

Two thumbs up also to this year's hosts, Gamz and Michael. They really did a great job! Then, I wouldn't end this post without mentioning Cianle. Heheh I was, and am still, his number one fan. hihihih He was at the entrance when we arrived and he was very accommodating.
